Angels Among Us

Spirit of the Hills columnist Rev. JoAnn Barrett reminds residents of the blessings in our town.

One of the prominent symbols of this holiday season is an angel. So one may ask the question, “What are angels?” Or you may just smile when you see them or you may even simply ignore them. They are still there. These responses are symbolic of the relationship we all have with angels, moving from belief to disbelief and even avoidance.

Angels have been powerful figures in the scriptures of the world religions in many different forms. Actually it is the Arch Angel Gabriel that appears most in an interactive level. He is said to be the messenger of the God. It was this angel that brought the news to Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus in the Christian tradition. And he appeared to Daniel in the Bible too. It was Gabriel that told Mohammad that he would write the Koran. Mohammad actually fought with Gabriel. He was so resistant to the message! But when an angel sends you a message, you must listen. The fight in the story portrays the resistance in each of us to be the radiant lights of the Divine in this world. You might think, of course we are resistant to that, it is a tough order to live that way.

The part that we forget is that when God calls us to accomplish a task, we are also given the tools to complete that task. Haven’t you ever heard the phrase God never gives us anything we can’t handle? Well that is because angels will assist us. They are the light or energy we can access to get us through the tough times. Sometimes we even get ideas from angels to become active and help others.

There are many angels around us even in our town. Look at all the wonderful outreach that is being done. Yesterday a group of people, who I believe, were answering a call from the Divine, got together in Huntington Station to have a Peace March. They wanted to speak out against violence in their community so they got together to spread the word that they care and will do something about the violence. Some might say, it didn’t change anything, but it did send a message. It sent a message of peace. They were beacons of hope in a wounded community.

The angels we see in the holiday displays are reminders of peace on Earth and good will towards humankind. The angels send the message but we need to do the work. So open your heart. Don’t fight the message. Stand and be counted. Be the Divine light wherever you may find yourself. Always remember as it says in A Course in Miracles,” God’s angels hover near and all about. Their love surrounds us and we are assured that we will never be left comfortless.” We remember and are thankful that angels help us.
