Melville Company Exceeds $8.5 Billion in Sales

Henry Schein announces record-setting year in profits from sales of medical supplies.

Henry Schein Inc., a medical supplies company in Melville, announced its sales reached a record-breaking $8.5 billion in 2011.

Of that $8.5 billion, the company, which sells veterinary, dental and medical office supplies, reported a net income of $367.7 million.

"…We are proud that net sales for the year exceeded $8.5 billion for the first time," said Stanley Bergman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein.

Bergman said in a release that Henry Schein aims to reach $10 billion in sales within the next few years by restructuring the company. If Henry Schein sustains its recent growth, it will likely surpass that mark as well. Compared to the previous year, the company increased its sales by 13.3 percent in 2011.

"During the fourth quarter we distributed approximately 1.7 million doses of seasonal influenza vaccines, as planned, bringing our total for the year to 11.6 million doses with sales of $88.3 million," Bergman said. "We are most pleased with the performance of our North American Medical group during the quarter, with internal growth well in excess of our estimate for market growth."

The company’s encouraging growth is also due its acquisition of other corporations including all of Oak Hill Capital Partners' interest in Butler Schein Animal Health. Henry Schein now owns 71.7 percent of that business. The move resulted in annual sales of approximately $2 billion, according to the release.

Henry Schein, with 14,000 employees, is the largest publicly traded company on Long Island.
