Melville Resident Elected Chairman of LIRR Commuter Council

Mark J. Epstein elected to two-year unpaid position.

Melville resident Mark J. Epstein, a partner in the Manhattan and Melville law firm of Pazer, Epstein & Jaffe, P.C. was recently elected chairman of the Long Island Rail Road Commuter Council (LIRRCC).

Epstein’s initial appointment to the council by the governor in 2009 was made possible by a recommendation from Suffolk Legis. Lou D’Amaro, D-Huntington Station, in whose district he resides.  The chairmanship is a two-year unpaid position.

“I was honored to have been put in a position to speak out on behalf of Suffolk County’s daily commuters as a representative to the Long Island Rail Road Commuters Council,” Epstein said in press release.  “As the newly elected chair of the LIRRCC, I will work even harder to make sure the concerns of the over 265,000 daily LIRR commuters are heard throughout the MTA organization and in Albany.”

The LIRRCC was created by the New York State Legislature to study, investigate, monitor and make recommendations with respect to the operations of the LIRR.  Epstein has been commuting between his home, Long Island office and Manhattan office daily for more than 25 years.  As chairman, he will oversee the filling of three vacancies on the board and seek ways to work with the towns on station parking and surrounding area improvements.

Epstein was appointed to the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission (SCHRC) in 2008 in a resolution sponsored by D’Amaro. A graduate of American University and New York Law School, he specializes in civil litigation in his law practice.

“In just two years on the Commuter Council, Mark Epstein has already proven himself to be an outstanding voice for Suffolk County rail users,” D’Amaro said.

“We are lucky to have him taking the helm in this new position where undoubtedly he will continue to draw upon his personal experiences and strong leadership skills to identify and find ways to best meet the needs of both commuters and the Long Island Rail Road,” D’Amaro added.
