Sound Off: Verizon or Optimum TV/Internet?

Help this clueless editor choose a side in one of Long Island's eternal debates: Verizon or Optimum?

Rangers or Islanders?

Robert Moses or Jones Beach?

They are plenty of Long Island-centric debates, but when it comes to Internet and TV service (OK, and phone, but what's a landline?), the heavyweight battle is between Verizon's FiOS and Cablevision's Optimum.

I'm posing this Sound Off today for purely selfish reasons. I'm moving into a new place in a month and from what I can tell, promotional packages for service from both companies are similar in price.

So, what I want to know is how they stack up in performance (i.e. Internet speed/reliability, TV channel selection, etc..). Has anyone had experiences with both Verizon and Optimum? Are there pros and cons to each provider?

Vote in today's poll below and share thoughts on the topic in the comments section.

Editor's note: We are aware that FiOS is not offered in some areas as this article is posted across several Patch sites. If that's the case for you, we'd still love to hear about your experiences/satisfaction level with Optimum.

  • Who provides the best Internet/cable package on Long Island?

When I first switched to verizon,it took us a while to figure out the channels. However, they carry all the samechannels as Optimumplus new ones and are costing us about $100 per month less than Cablevision. Please note that we had the Platinum package through Cablevision which ran us almost $220 per month for the triple play and we are now paying about $120 for the same channels and package. The ONLY downside I have found (if you could call it that) is we have to dial the area code wherever we call out even if it's the same area code. For a $100 a month, I can certainly deal with that!

I would check this out with Verizon. I have used their service for a few years and never have to dial an area code unless it's outside the 631 area.

The reason you have to dial area code is because the phone is calles digital voice or voip.It saves you about 8-9 dollars a month on taxes and surcharges. You could have regular voice ,but you would pay thoses taxes again.Another feature is portability, say you move to texas you can bring your 631 phone number with you.Another thing it enables you to get caller id on your tv.

Our Verizon bill jumped so high and Cablevision offered a great deal to return. I say go with the lower cost and don't be afraid to play them off each other.

I'd certainly like the option of having Fios here in Babylon Village. Doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon.

I left Cablevision in April 2009 after getting too many "channel not available" messages and internet speeds that were terrible. I decided to come back in November 2011 to see if there had been any improvement and surprise - same issues as before - no change. By January after realizing my mistake, I returned to Verizon and will never go back to Cablevision. Verizon is without a doubt superior in every way - assuming you can learn to live without News12 (note - VZ now carried MSG HD.) Internet is excellent and consistent (note - we never lost service during the August hurricane while CVC on our block was out) and I am actually saving money compared to what CVC offered. Never looking back again.

I left cable and have had verizon for the, past 4-5 years (and LOVE Verizon). I went back to cable in Jan 2012, for cost savings, and can't wait to go back to verizon. I will be going back next week. Verizon's service is far superior to cable's.

Although prices may be near the same...Verizon's product is by far superior to Cablevision's product.

Left Cablevision to go to Verizon. When we left Cablevision had a horrible experience with cancelling and with customer service. They claimed we stole there boxes after returning them and they would sue us, etc. This was years ago and we still get mailers, phone calls and people coming to our door to have us switch back. Part of the problem was when our introduction lower price contract was up we called to see if they could give us a better price to stay with them and they wouldn't. After all the work of switching to FIOS they called to say they would give us a better price. They think it is a game and can't stand them. Would never go back ...LOVE Verizon!!!

We had issues with Verizon when we move back to the Island, they never disclosed that Fios is not available in Brookhaven so we switched to Cablevision and found the service to be terrible and very expensive. We cancelled cable and just have phone and internet saving us $180 a month. We get letters every day with "deals" to sign up again. No thanks!

We have Verizon for our phone and internet and use Directv. I'm in Patchogue and FIOS is not available in my area. I live far from the main box and Verizon has been out to my house to repair the phone and internet lines almost once a month at one point. I dont know why they refuse to replace the wires which I'm told are being eaten by squirrels. Their customer service is horrible and when you call, you speak to someone in India who doesnt speak english very well. On top of that when i call customer service I always have the same issue with my internet going out and they make me run a million tests until I ask to speak to a manager because im tired of wasting my time on these tests that i have done in the past for the same recurring problem. I had to go to the corporate office to complain because everytime it rained i had issues with the interenet lines. So far so since Verizon was last here (3 months ago) I havent had too many issues. Hopefully it stays that way!!!

Linda E . . . The reason some customers have to dial the area code before the number is "Verizon Voice" This is really great, as I can block up to 10 numbers . . . great for all the political calls.

I have had both Cablevision and Dish. Signed up for Verizon and love it. Cable always went out in the a.m. or storms. Dish . . . heavy rain and nothing! Verizon has yet to do this. Also have FIOS internet (fast) and "Voice" for phone. Best value for money.

Verizon Fios has great packages but check the bills, a huge portion of them is a surcharge for this or that and they are nuts.

Your asking the wrong question. It's DIRECTV for tv service and Optimum for Internet. Gives you the bet of all worlds for the cheapest price. Optimum and Verizon pale in comparison to Directv.

Go with Verizon. They have better customer support, faster speeds, cheaper price, better technology. The only thing that optimum does have, if you have a triple play package, that Verizon does not is Optimum Wifi. That may or may not be important to you but, for some, it is a killer feature.

I wish Brookhaven would stop the firewall and let Fios into the town so people can have another choice.
