Art in the Park Fine Art and Craft Fair returns to town June 2-3.
The Art League of Long Island’s Art in the Park Fine Art and Craft Fair will return to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. The event is an Art League tradition that has attracted thousands of art lovers for 45 years. The free craft fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, rain or shine. The fair showcases the orginal work of about 70 artists and craftspeople who will be selling paintings, photographs, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, wearable art, and more. Prizes will be awarded to the top artists. This year, radio station 94X, along with a panel of judges will select Huntington’s First “Idol” through a talent competition. Winners of the Seventh Annual Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation Competition are announced.
The music of Chopin, Beethoven, Kabalevsky and more filled the Steinway & Sons Used Piano Gallery, as Long Island students put their abilities to the test in the Seventh-Annual Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation Competition. Students were placed in categories according to their age and skill. The Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation is a non-profit organization of professional music educators. The organization works to provide recitals for performance opportunities for our students, such as the competition held at the Steinway gallery. As part of its Spring Festival, the Dix Hill Performing Arts Center will present a Guitar Extravaganza Salute to Guitar Legend Tony Mottola, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. One of the most sought-after studio musicians in the recording industry, Mottola worked regularly with music icons like Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, and orchestrated albums for Burl Ives. He recorded 58 albums before his death in 2004, and scored a number of films, including Running On Empty, as well as a ‘50s television series called Danger. Mottola played guitar in the NBC Orchestra under Doc Severinson for The Tonight Show. Free passes available to Augustana, Big Shot and Dennis DeYoung shows next week in Huntington.
The Paramount Theater in Huntington has extended their free ticket offer to those who continue to help with the fire-affected areas on Long Island. Because of the ongoing fire problem, theater officials extended their free ticket giveaway to include three shows next week — Augustana, Big Shot and Dennis DeYoung. "All emergency personnel or residents that were affected by the incidents have a chance to enjoy complimentary admission to any show," according to a theater press release Wednesday. Last weekend, the Paramount handed out 50 tickets to two shows. Gilbert Roseman, who recently retired as the Art League of Long Island’s Board Chairman, was honored at a private reception held in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 30. Roseman’s years of dedication and stewardship of the Board were celebrated by fellow board members, staff, faculty and friends of the Art League. Noted artist and faculty member Dan Christoffel presented the recently retired chairman with a personalized pastel portrait of his likeness. Roseman served as Chairman since 2009, and 10 years prior to that, as legal counsel. The Babylon Citizen Council on the Arts offers a variety of classes, musical and theater performances, art shows and an annual awards ceremony. Some take place at the BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst; others take place at the Babylon Town Hall Annex at Phelps Lane Park in North Babylon or the Old Town Hall in Babylon Village. One upcoming event to note is the annual Teen Youth Theatre Awards. The TOBY Awards are set for June 1 this year. The ceremony will be held at the Babylon Junior-Senior High School.
