The Town touts its eco-friendly efforts at annual event.
The annual Earth Day Celebration at Town Hall in Lindenhurst was smaller this year, but well-attended, despite the drizzle and the threat of heavier rain. The Town showed off its eco-friendly efforts, such as its Long Island Green Homes Program. Fabco Industries and Covanta, which for the past 20 years has operated the town’s resource recovery facility located by the town’s old landfill in West Babylon, was also there. The Town of Babylon Animal Shelter was there, too, with some doggie ambassadors seeking forever homes: Dan, Remi and Darwin, a four-and-half-year-old lab mix. Take a look at some of the highlights of the event. And be sure to share your photos and videos of the event in this story. Not sure how to upload photos to Patch? …

News and notes from the Town of Huntington.
Town Joins Energy Challenge The Huntington Town Board voted to accept the U.S. Department of Energy’s invitation to join the federal government’s Better Buildings Energy Challenge partnership on May 8. Huntington is the only municipality on Long Island and one of five in the state to be invited to join the challenge, in which governments pledge to achieve a 20 percent improvement in energy usage by the year 2020. The invitation came as a result of the Town’s innovative use of its $1.725 million Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant and the breadth of its energy efficiency projects, which included replacing 5,000 street lights with energy efficient fixtures that reduced electricity usage by 59 percent; installing energy efficient …

Dix Hills resident JoAnn Pushkin among those in attendance at event held at Carlyle on the Green.
Hundreds of health professionals and activists packed Carlyle on the Green Friday for the second annual "Breast Cancer Summit," a place also packed with heart-rending stories and a message of hope. The half-day conference was packed with doctors and legislators along with many people directly affect by breast cancer. There were literally scores of people with stories to tell. One of them was 52-year-old JoAnn Pushkin, who describes herself as "a ticking time bomb." The Dix Hills woman has endured seven surgeries, eight rounds of chemo-therapy and 30 rounds of radiation. She believes her cancer could have been stopped in its tracks had medical safeguards been available to her. Specifically, Pushkin has what doctors describe as "high density…

Councilman Gene Cook 'appalled' by actions of majority members; Dems claim political grandstanding.
A Huntington Town Board resolution to refinance $24 million in municipal bonds failed Tuesday, drawing sharp criticism from members of the Democratic majority toward minority party members of the board who requested more time for review. Sponsored by Supervisor Frank Petrone, the resolution called for refinancing of bonds issued from 2002-05 at lower interest rates. The move, recommended by New York Municipal Advisors Corporation, was projected to save taxpayers $100,000 a year for the remainder of the life of the bonds, or more than $700,000 overall, according to A.J. Carter, the town information officer. At a daytime Town Hall meeting, council members Mark Mayoka and Gene Cook abstained on the resolution, which by law required four votes…

Suffolk County Water Authority is declared winner of having the most palate-pleasing tap.
Dix Hills no longer has the title of "Best-Tasting" drinking water. This year’s prize for the favorite tap water in Suffolk County slipped out of Dix Hills’ hands and into the Suffolk County Water Authority's during the annual Best-Tasting Water Contest on Tuesday. The competition, held at SUNY Farmingdale, was between finalists Greenlawn, South Huntington, Dix Hills and the Suffolk County Water Authority. About 100 students drank from cups labeled A,B,C and D. Then, without knowing where the water in each cup came from, voted on their favorite. "We’re delighted that our water was chosen for its excellent taste, but our top priority is making sure it’s pure and safe, which we are able to do because our water is tested constantly and …
Tell Patch your thoughts on the President's backing of same-sex marriage.
Barack Obama on Wednesday became the first sitting president in history to announce his support for same-sex marriage. “At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Mr. Obama said. Obama told ABC news during a sit-down interview. The hot-button issue made headlines earlier this week when North Carolina passed an amendment that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The president said he was disappointed with the state's decision, but had yet to publically announce his support for it. With political pressure intensified, the White House quickly scheduled the sit-down interview. "I have to tell you …

Seeking a new family pet? This sweet pup might be the right one for you and your family.
Remi is a sweet, docile pit bull mix who's seeking a forever home. She came to the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter a little more than a year ago as a stray. Most recently she was playing doggie ambassador for the TOB Animal Shelter at its booth at the Town's annual Earth Day Celebration at Town Hall in Lindenhurst. According to shelter volunteer Christina Catalano, Remi is approximately three years old, and she got her name because when she arrived at the shelter she originally had a nametag that read, "Remington." Remi showed off her beautiful brindle coat, kind disposition and her knowledge of basic commands on Saturday, May 5. For more information about Remi, call the TOB Animal Shelter (BAARC) at 631-643-9270, go to the shelter's …

News and notes from the Town of Huntington.
Huntington Regains 'Tree City USA' Designation Huntington regained its Arbor Day Foundation 'Tree City USA' designation after a year long effort and celebrated by planting four trees at the Town's Breezy Park. The planting also marked the start of Huntington’s landscaping effort at Breezy Park, an active recreation area where many people will have a chance to appreciate and experience the Town’s greenery. To qualify for Tree City USA designation, communities must meet standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters. Nationally, there are more than 3,400 communities with the designation, including 99 in New York State 17 others on Long Island. Obtaining Tree City USA designation was part of …

Dix Hills breast cancer survivor JoAnn Pushkin pushes for law requiring additional screening.
Seven years ago I learned two things: I learned I had breast cancer and I learned I had dense breast tissue. Tragically, I learned them both the same day. The reality is that I, along with 40 percent of women of mammography age, have dense breast tissue, which dramatically compromises the effectiveness of a mammogram and also puts us at greater risk for developing breast cancer. I am not alone: according to a recent Harris Poll, an astounding 95 percent of women are uninformed about their own breast density. Breast density refers to the composition of breast tissue. The breast is composed of fatty and "dense" tissue. Dense tissue shows up white on a mammogram; unfortunately so does cancer. A cancer lurking behind dense tissue is often …

Quality discussion and diverse opinions are a good thing. Show boating is another. Mayorka and Cook may not support Petrone's politics, but they need to be respectful to the elected official and the community. An appropriate heads-up prior to the vote, is the appropriate step.   more ›
