According to Lisa Sherman of Coldwell Banker said high property taxes can make it difficult to sell homes in this tough economy, but when it comes to the very top, buyers expect such costs.

"You're talking about houses in the $1+mil category, which are dwindling at this point in Dix Hills, but most people buying in this category understand the tax situation. It is really hard for someone buying in the $600-800K category, when the house has higher than 16K or 17K in taxes, because that is usually a buyer who is upgrading and can afford the price of the house but not the taxes.

Sherman also said that because the fallen housen market has cause lower assessments on homes, many homeowners have grieved their taxes.

"Basically, if you haven't grieved your taxes to get them lowered in the last few years, you are most likely paying too much," she said.

All property tax information is available on the Town of Huntington's website in the Property Tax Info section, searchable by address.

Results break down tax bill sinto school taxes, library taxes, highway taxes, and numerous special district taxes.
