5 Things You Can't Do In Half Hollow Hills

There are lots of things you can do in Half Hollow Hills, but here's a fun list of things you can't.

1. Live in Half Hollow Hills. You can live on a hill, on Half Hollow Road and even attend Half Hollow Hills School District, but when your mail comes, it's addressed to either Dix Hills or Melville. How did the school district get the name anyway?

2. Go grocery shopping. You can pick up bread and milk around the area, but trying to do your grocery shopping for the week takes a field trip to Commack or Huntington. on Walt Whitman Road in Melville is the one main stop for food buying...unless of course you're shopping for the whole soccer team, and in that case go to Costco.

3. Take a stroll down Main Street.  There just isn't one. For that downtown feeling, you have to head to Babylon or Huntington.

4. Go to the movies. Want to catch the latest flick? Good luck braving the traffic to Deer Park or Huntington. There are no movie theaters in Dix Hills or Melville. There are Red Boxes at 7-Eleven though if you wanted to stay in and watch a movie in your pajamas.

5. Avoid traffic along the Route 110 corridor. More than 12,000 cars pass through it daily, according to the Department of Transportation. Now that construction has begun on the Northern State Parkway to replace the aging overpasses, forget it. During rush hour, we all cross our fingers.
