How Bad Are the Mosquitoes in HHH?

With West Nile confirmed and a hot, wet summer just starting, we want to know how bad the mosquito population is by you.

This summer has already provided Long Island with some tough hits – record breaking heat, humid conditions more akin to Florida than New York and now the findings of West Nile in a mosquito pool in Bay Shore.

mosquitoes are a part of summer living here on the island, but the West Nile Virus has presented a new threat in the last decade plus since appearing for the first time in 1999. The virus produces flu-like symptoms that can, in some case, develop to become more serious and even fatal. According to a report by Molloy College, the insects "breed in pools of standing water, and populations can increase dramatically after consistent rains like those our region has experienced this summer."

With this summer's off-and-on downpours, excessive heat and humid conditions for the past month, it is expected that the mosquito population could skyrocket around the area, creating more potential hazards during outdoor activities.
