How to Keep the Kids (And Adults Too) Entertained This Weekend

As Halloween approaches, there are many local attractions, including the annual Fall Farm Festivals, that will please the kids and adults alike.

Local Fall Farm Festivals

The annual Fall Farm Festival at White Post Farms in Melville opens this weekend, complete with pumpkin picking, sing-a-long hayrides through the corn fields, numerous shows, attractions and entertainment.  The $13.95 per person fee also includes admission to the animal farm and petting zoo, as well as unlimited use of all playgrounds and bouncers. The farm is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

FW Schmitt's Family Farm in Melville also opens this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit their infamous daytime corn maze, pumpkin picking, farm animals, playgrounds, pick your own vegetables and much more.

For older kids and adults alike, get a jump start on Halloween at the Bayville Scream Park, located at 8 Bayville Avenue, Bayville. Brave the Bloodsworth Haunted Mansion and four other terrifying attractions including Uncle Needle's Funhouse of Fear in 3-D and Curse of the Zombie Pirates. The Scream Park is open Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on-line in advance at http://www.bayvillescreampark.com/tickets.htm or on-site the day of your visit. For the younger kids, The Bayville Scream Park  hosts Kids Not-So-Scary-Days both Saturday and Sunday, featuring less scary versions of their popular attractions.  There is also a pumpkin bounce, pumpkin patch, the spooky Halloween Express Train, hay ride and The Creepy Cafe selling Halloween snacks like candy apples, cotton candy and popcorn. There are still all the regular attractions too in the Adventure Park like Spooky Pirate Miniature golf all decorated for Halloween. Scream Park hours are from 11 a.m to 6 p.m both days. Music and Stories

Celebrate the harvest with the Long Island Children's Museum as they host the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra on Sunday. At 11:30 a.m. there will be a workshop in which the kids will be making shakers from gourds, followed by a musical celebration in the theater with the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra, as they perform on instruments also created by gourds! The fee is $4 with museum admission of $10. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bring the kids, ages 2-6, to the Dix Hills Branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library on Saturday morning from 10 a.m.to 10:45 a.m. for storytime and a craft. Then, in the afternoon from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., Pickles the Clown will entertain grades K-5 with magic tricks. These activities have no fee, but are available to district residents only.

Also on Saturday morning, Borders Bookstore in Airport Plaza in Farmingdale hosts Storytime from 11 a.m.until noon.  Kids and their parents/caregivers are invited to join in for a fun and entertaining hour to hear the latest children stories being published as well as sharing cookies and drinks. There is no fee for this activity.

Apple Picking

The apples and raspberries are ripe for the picking this weekend at Fort Salonga Farm on 30 Meadow Glen Road in Northport. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Call 631-269-9666 for a recording of the latest updates on apple availability.
