Labor Day Roundup

Local events to keep you and your family busy this Labor Day, so you don't have to travel far, endure traffic or spend a lot of money.

There are numerous events in the Dix Hills area to keep you and your family busy this Labor Day. And many offer no need to travel far, endure traffic or spend a lot of money.

Baseball

Catch a double header and fireworks show at the Long Island Ducks Stadium as the Ducks close out the summer season with a Labor Day celebration. Long Island will play a rare day/night doubleheader against two different Atlantic League opponents at Suffolk County Sports Park. The Ducks and Newark Bears will play at noon in a makeup from the postponed Aug. 22 game. Tickets from the Aug. 22 game are good for admittance to the matinee. The gates will open at 11:00 a.m. In the night, the Ducks will take on the Bridgeport Bluefish at 6:35 p.m., followed by a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza. Water Fun

Monday is the last day of operation for our town and community pools. Hit the water for the last time this season at the Dix Hills Park Pool, open Monday, from 12:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Aside from the 50-meter pool, there are two diving boards, a large deck area, locker rooms, playground, basketball, kiddie pool, and a food concession. Daily fees range from $4 to $8.50 per person. Parking is free.

Also nearby is Cantiague Park in Hicksville, which has waterslides, diving, and a pool for the little ones. A single-day admission pass is $15-$20 a person plus $5 parking fee. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This is the last weekend to take advantage of the water rides and attractions at Long Island's waterpark, Splish Splash. Splish Splash offers water-based activities for the whole family. They are open on Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is from $27.99 to $36.99 per person.

Fairs and Festivals

There are some nearby fairs and festivals taking place this weekend and continuing through Monday. Enjoy the 39th annual Mother Cabrini Italian Feast on the campus of Suffolk County Community College, Grant Campus, on Crooked Hill Road in Brentwood. It is sponsored by the Giuseppe A. Nigro Lodge, Order of the Sons of Italy in America and offers rides, food, live music and entertainment Monday, from 3-11pm. Admission is free with a fee for the rides. At the Greenlawn's Fireman's Fair, 23 Boulevard Avenue, enjoy culinary treats, rides, games and raffles from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is also free with a fee for the rides. Call 631-261-9103 or visit www.greenlawnfd.org for more information.

Mini Golf

Miniature golf fans have their choice of a variety of courses this Monday. Visit The Skydrive Golf Center in Farmingdale from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. to play an 18-hole miniature golf course. Also available is a 72-stall, all-weather driving range.

Also visit Heartland Golf Park's miniature golf mountain as well as their fully lit 9-hole, par-3 golf course and their two-tiered, 92-stall driving range on Long Island Avenue in Edgewood, just off of Commack Road.

Test your putting skills at Boomers in Medford. They offer not only mini-golfing, but go-cart racing, rock wall, bumper boats, batting cages, kiddie rides and a giant arcade. They are open from 11am to 8pm.

Farms

White Post Farms will be hosting a fun-filled day complete with special character appearances. Meet and take photos with Go Diego and Kai-Lan. Your $12.95 admission includes unlimited use of their Bouncer Playgrounds – both wet and dry, the "Singing Chicken Show," the all new "Animal Band Jamboree Show," use of the picnic areas and playgrounds/giant sandbox and of course, the animal farm and petting zoo. Free hayrides will also be available this Monday as well.

Rides

There's something for everyone just minutes away on Route 110 in Farmingdale. On Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., enjoy fun, games and rides at Adventureland. A  pay-one-price bracelet costs $21.99. Outdoor Movie Night

This Monday evening join the restaurant PRIME on New York Avenue in Huntington for an outdoor movie night featuring "The Hangover." This free movie is rated R and will begin 15 minutes after sundown. The outdoor theater is located behind the cabana bar. Popcorn, cocktails, barbeque and blankets will be available. Call 631-385-1515 for more information.

Parks

Visit one of Dix Hills' many parks to enjoy the last official day of summer. Save gas, money and travel time spending a relaxing day at Arboretum Park, on the corner of Threepence and Wilmington Drives. This secluded and quiet park offers playgrounds, basketball, tennis, handball, softball, the new Anne Frank Memorial Garden and is a great place to have a picnic.

Also try Caledonia Park with its playground, tennis, softball, soccer/football field and a picnic area with barbeques.

Dix Hills Park on Vanderbilt offers basketball, a picnic area, playground, fields, the town pool, ice-skating and a 9-hole golf course.

William Kessler Park, next to Sunquam Elementary has softball fields, picnic/BBQ area and a playground.

Terry Farrell Park on Wolf Hill Road has playgrounds, bocce, tennis, and athletic fields. 

Don't forget Otsego Park, which has lit baseball, softball, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, rollerblading and soccer.

Nearby, West Hills County Park, between Round Swamp and Sweet Hollow Road, offers hiking, picnicking, bridle paths, playground, dog parks, and horseback riding at Sweet Hills Stables and while there, visit Jayne's Hill, Long Island's highest peak.
