Huntington Station Man Wins $2 Million
Jose Gomez really cleaned up when he went out to wash his clothes.
The Huntington Station man won a $2 million scratchoff Lottery prize. Gomez, 35, and his laundry arrived at Combo Laundromat on Aug. 25, thanks to owner Robert Hou, who picks up customers on weekends who don't have cars.
He received a ceremonial check Thursday outside the laundromat on Lowndes Avenue from lottery spokeswoman Yolanda Vega.
Playground Comes to Life
More than 250 volunteers worked together Tuesday to build a playground on the Dix Hills campus of SCO Family of Services.
The playground went up in about six hours, said Kathleen Sullivan, associate director of strategic partnerships.
New Executive at Cold Spring Harbor Lab
Teri F. Willey has been hired by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to help it commercialize some of its discoveries and turn them into products.
As vice president of business development and technology transfer, a new position at the lab, Willey will direct the lab's commercialization and technology transfer activities, including patenting, licensing, company start-ups, and corporate partnerships and collaborations.

Whitman Students Take Pledge on Texting and Driving
A national safety campaign came to Whitman High School, with numerous students signing pledges to refrain from texting while driving.The national It Can Wait campaign is sponsored by AT&T and other mobile phone carriers.

The goal is to prevent accidents resulting from texting while driving. Some students said they'd made friends stop mixing the two activities and more than one mentioned having told their parents to stop.
