Question of the Day: "SlutWalks"

We ask, you answer.

A comment about rape prevention by a Toronto police constable sparked international protests known as "SlutWalks."

"I'm not supposed to say this," the officer told a group of students at an Osgoode Hall Law School safety forum on January 24, but to prevent being sexually assaulted, “Avoid dressing like sluts.”

The officer did write a formal apology and promises of further professional training were made, but the victim-blaming gaffe sparked the movement which protests the blaming of victims of sexual assault. India held its first SlutWalk on July 31 and another took place in New York City on Aug. 8.

Our question of the day is, why are rape victims given the blame? Are words such as "slut" or "whore" thrown around too often? Do you think a double standard for men and women exists? Why do you think that is (or isn't)? What do you think can be done to protect victims from being blamed for sexual assault?
