Remember This? Rollingwood Flood of 1950

A look back in time at the history of Half Hollow's Hills.

Ever wonder what Half Hollow Hills used to look like? Take a trip back in time with Patch and the Half Hollow Hills Community Library as we uncover the past.

Pictured here, are Melville fire fighters during a flash flood in August of 1950. The flood took place in what was then, the newly constructed Rollingwood development, at the foot of Jayne's Hill in Melville.

At that time, Fire Department Chief John Hauser told The Long-Islander that about 18 houses in the area had their basements flooded. Three of those homes had their cellers filled up to their kitchen doors with water, the paper reported. He added that 32 men from the department worked to pump the water out for six and a half hours.
