Visit the Museum of Natural History from the HHH Library

You can "borrow" museum passes from the library and go for free!

It's really simple and fun to go to the American Museum of Natural History. First go to the Half Hollow Hills library and borrow tickets. Yes, borrow. So you can go to the museum for free. You just have to pay for your transportation. The has many museum tickets for library card holders. Or you can pay $16 for adults and $9 for children when you get to the museum.

Check out the train schedule. It's best to go off peak, arriving into the city after 10 a.m. and leaving before 4 p.m: It's not as crowded and it cost less. I prefer the Wyandanch train station because it seem to always have available parking. Round trip off peak for adults is $19.50 and for kids it's about $1.50.

Taking the train and then the subway to the museum is so cool--you never set foot outside. Once you arrive to Penn Station, hop on the C subway uptown for five stops to 81 St., Museum of Natural History. There is a special entrance to the museum right there when you get off the subway.

You will start off at the lower level of the museum, which has the food court. You can walk up the stairs to the first floor and go to Ocean Life with the giant whale hanging from the ceiling or take the elevator to the fourth floor and start with the dinosaurs.

The discovery room on the first floor is a giant science playroom. It has a lot of fun things to see and touch, like the giant Madagascar Hissing Cockroach.

Free tours are available but with kids it's more fun just to run around.

The library has lots of other great museum passes. You can visit other wonderful museums for free by borrowing the library's museum passes. They currently have passes for nine museums available to borrow from the Youth Services department. The museums are: the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages of Stony Brook, The Long Island Children's Museum, American Museum of Natural History, Old Westbury Gardens, Cradle of Aviation museum, the Vanderbilt Museum, The Nassau Countyu Firefighters Museum, and Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. Reservations may be made in person, online or by calling them at 498-1233.
