Weekend Guide to Dix Hills and Beyond

Here's a list of activities to keep you and your family busy this weekend.

Fairs and Festivals

Starflower Enterprises and the Town of Huntington present the 13th annual Long Island Naturally Environmental Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a community yard sale, live music with a solar powered stage, environmental fun and learning including games, activities, kite making, kite flying and solar car races. Learn ways you can "go green" at home and meet experts on green cleaning, energy and more. The fair will be held on Manor Farm (Manor Road, Huntington). Admission is free.

The United Methodist Church of Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor, located at 180 West Neck Road in Huntington, hosts its 22nd annual Fall Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. 4 p.m., rain or shine. There will be a tag sale, jewelry, toys, baked goods, produce, cheeses, pet photo contest, children's stories, a silent auction, live music and more.

Get a little taste of Greece at the Saint Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church's Greek Food Festival in Greenlawn. Enjoy homemade Greek specialties, as well Greek music, dance, vendors, a flea market and more. There will be over 50 raffle prizes with the Grand Prize being a 2011 BMW 328i or $25,000! The fair takes place Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

The 31st Annual Pickle Festival, sponsored by the Greenlawn-Centerport Historical Association, will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on John Gardiner's Farm, 900 Park Avenue in Greenlawn. There will homemade pickles, jams, jellies, farm grown vegetables, baked goods and activities including a corn maze and hay rides. Donation of $3 per adult, children under 12 are free.

The 20th annual Smithtown Country Fair, taking place on the grounds of the United Methodist Church of Smithtown on Middle Country Road, will have games, crafts, bouncers, face and pumpkin picking, baked goods, a classic car exhibit, boutiques and entertainment rain or shine on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

The Village of Northport hosts their annual Cow Harbor Day on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Northport Village Park and Main Street. There will be a traditional parade down Main Street, followed by festivities including amusement rides, live music, vendors, boating contests and barbecue style food.  On Main Street the local vendors will offer discounted items, food and bric-a-brac. Admission is free.

Seniors

The Melville Marriot plays host to The Over 50 Fairon Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This event will bring seniors over the age of 50 together with vendors, businesses and nonprofit organizations. There will be over 70 exhibitor spaces with merchants selling items and offering information, as well as four speaker rooms offer a wide range of classes and discussions, including yoga, Zumba, self-defense, long-term care insurance, improving financial situations,  mah jongg instructions and home ideas. Admission is $8 at the door.

Home

The Long Island Home and Landscape Showcomes to Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This show is designed for homeowners in all stages of remodeling, landscaping and decorating their homes. There will be hundreds of exhibits with merchandise, sample interior and exterior vignettes, and product demonstrations to help inspire homeowners with countless ideas on enhancing their home's comfort and functionality, as well as its aesthetic appeal and overall value. Admission is $9; under 16 is free.

Art

The Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills continues their exhibition, "The Lively Eye: Five Generations of a Family in the Arts." On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., view a vast range of work in all media by the descendants and extended family of the world-renowned architect Stanford White. White (1853-1906) is best known for designing architectural masterpieces such as the Washington Square Arch, the second Madison Square Garden, the New York Herald Building, gentlemen's clubs, and the Boston Public Library. Admission is free.

This is the last weekend to view 'The Long Island Biennial 2010" at The Heckscher Museum of Art.  This exhibition features 44 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and photographs by professional artists living on Long Island. Visit the exhibition Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and cast your vote for the People's Choice Award. Admission is from $4-$8; members and children under 10 are free.

In commemoration of the coming 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Nassau County Museum of Artin Roslyn is proud to exhibit Civil War paintings by Mort Künstler.  The exhibition consists of approximately 50 paintings accompanied by a selection of documentary objects. Many of the paintings are from Künstler's own collection; others are from various private and public collections. The exhibit is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and costs $4-$10 plus $2 parking.

 Music/Theater

"My Fair Lady"continues this weekend at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport. Join Thomas M. Hammond as misogynistic and snobbish phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, as he agrees to a wager that he can take flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, played by Rachel Moulton, and make her presentable in high society. Show times are Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at the box office or on-line at http://www.johnwengemantheater.com/.

The Dix Hills Branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library presents "Goin' Hollywood Musical Revue"on Sunday at 2 p.m. This fast paced fully staged musical revue, performed by Plaza Theatrical Productions Inc., is filled with the excitement of by-gone Hollywood musicals. Highlights include "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "The Trolley Song," "You Made Me Love You" and "That's Entertainment."  Admission is free.

Visit Adelphi University for an evening with Lucie Arnaz on Saturday night at 8 p.m. Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball, will be appearing in their intimate Concert Hall to share a personal evening of satisfying music that touches on the important events of our lives.
