Weekend Planner: Memorial Soccer Tournament

Event: On July 20, 2009, 19-year-old Half Hollow Hills East alumnus and University of Buffalo student Matthew Scarpati was tragically struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding his bike on the Wantagh Bike Path. In his memory, the Miles For Matt Foundation, an approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was established.

Matt was an outstanding soccer player, having played three years of varsity for Half Hollow Hills High School East, and played for numerous clubs including HBC, Dix Hills, East Meadow, Auburndale, Brentwood and others. He also played on the NY State Cup team as well as ODP Select. He traveled to England for the Shrewsbury International Tournament and represented the United States with FCNY in 2007.

The Matthew Logan Scarpati Memorial Soccer Tournament has been established to be a yearly celebration of Matt’s life by bringing the Long Island soccer community together, and will be used to provide an annual source of fundraising for the Miles for Matt Foundation. Event: Tanger Outlets kicks off their 2012 summer concert season with the local New York sensation, Outasight, taking the stage.

The singer and rapper from Yonkers will pump up the crowd in the first free show of the Summer playing his top hits including "Tonight is the Night" and "Now or Never".

When: Saturday, June 9; 6-8 p.m.

Where: Tanger Outlets at The Arches, located at the fountain.

Price: FREE

Event: Enjoy art, wine and appetizers during an auction at in Melville.

When: Saturday, June 9; 8:15 p.m., wine and appetizers; 9 p.m., auction.

Where: Temple Beth Torah, 35 Bagatelle Rd., Melville

Price: $25 per person, credited back to the first purchase.

 

  • Police Surgeons Benevolent Car Show Honoring John Capano

 Event: Enjoy a car show to benefit the family of ATF Senior Special Agent John Capano, who spent 23 years as an agent with Melville's Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. 

Capano, was  when he attempted to prevent an armed robbery at   this past New Year’s Eve. He was a member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association and the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI) who had had taught U.S. military and local forces in Afghanistan and Iraq how to investigate blasts.

Guests will enjoy entertainment, food and raffles.
