What Should Be Done to Improve Rt. 110? [POLL]

Broadhollow Road is one of the busiest and deadliest roads for pedestrians in the state. Tell us how it should be improved.

The Route 110 corridor is the heart of Suffolk County's corporate center. The road is also one of the busiest for drivers and deadliest for pedestrians.

More than 120,000 vehicles pass through the 10-mile stretch of Route 110 each day, according to the Department of Transportation.

Specifically built to move cars through as quickly as possible, the road provides few safety measures for pedestrians. The lack of consideration for foot traffic in its design is a main factor the road is one of the deadliest in the county for walkers, said Ryan Lynch, policy director for The Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

Ongoing construction to the Northern State Parkway has added to the dangers and congestion of the road.

The Tri-State Transportation Campaign is looking to legislators to provide better safety precautions for foot travelers on the road. The policy director said a more pedestrian friendly Route 110 will benefit business by encouraging people to walk to local retail stores and spend money. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is also eyeing the busy roadway for the development of a bus route.
