December Performances Less Than $10

The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center promises a spectacular season with events close to home.

The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center is anticipating a “a December to remember” with a broad selection of musical and theater events close to home, all priced at $10 dollars or less per ticket.

Here is the line up:

Children’s Theater: The series kicks off Dec. 3 with a delightful children’s theater presentation, Dora the Explorer LIVE!  in “Dora’s Pirate Adventure”, with performances at both 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Dec. 4 at noon and 3 p.m. The play is directed by Professor Jodi Gibson and features actors from the award-winning Five Towns College Theatre Arts Division.

Dora, her best buddy Boots the Monkey, and the rest of their friends embark on an exciting trip to Treasure Island. The audience helps them navigate over Dancing Mountain, through Silly Singing Bridge and to confront the Pirate Piggies. Along the way, the audience will use their map-reading, counting, musical and language skills to successfully help Dora reach the treasure. All ends happily onstage with a "yo-ho-ho!"

Barbershop Quartet: On Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m., the Center will present Mostly Barbershop directed by Professor Wayne Grimmer. The show will feature the Five Towns College Barbershop Quartet, Five Towns College A Cappella Ensembles and the Long Island Sound Chorus. Tickets are $10.

Come experience Barbershop ensembles and quartets, vocal excellence, and sheer enjoyment of highest quality choral sound. If you like hearing four-part Barbershop harmony, you can’t miss with Mostly Barbershop. FTC A Cappella Ensembles, the Long Island Sound Chorus, and the latest FTC Barbershop Quartet are sure to make an appearance, delighting the performers and audiences alike. Barbershop is an extraordinary musical experience, it is music in a very pure form, created only with human voices coming together to create rich and satisfying harmonies pleasing to the ears and invigorating to the soul. People from all over the world, from all walks of life, and all ages come together in song, bridging gaps like no other hobby. For its many devotees, Barbershop is far more than a hobby – it is a passion and a way of life. Perfecting this musical artform takes dedication and great commitment. When done well, Barbershop reaches audiences on a deep, inner-level with its ringing sounds and its evocative, exhilarating and thrilling harmonies. Head down for a fun evening of a cappella and these wonderful vocal vibrations. Director Wayne Grimmer always has some exiting special surprises for his devoted Barbershop audience members. Guitar Extravaganza: Guitar enthusiasts will be thrilled when the Center presents the ever-popular Guitar Extravaganza on Dec. 8 at 7:30 pm, directed by Professor Peter Rogine and featuring off-the-record arrangements scored for guitar orchestra by Professor Stephen Briody. There will be surprise guests and a meet the artist reception following the performance. Tickets are $10.

In a once-in-a-lifetime concert, celebrating the music of great vocalists Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee and Rosemary Clooney and the 20th century’s best jazz guitarists Tony Mottola, Johnny Smith, Al Caiola and Django Reinhardt, this concert features off-the-record arrangements scored for Guitar Orchestra by Dr. Steven Briody. Tony Mottola expert John Kelly has spent countless hours listening to vintage recordings to recreate musical history. Yes, there will be surprise guests. This version of the Guitar Extravaganza will showcase the Nashville Studio Guitar Ensemble and the Tony Mottola Recording Guitar Ensemble, followed by a Meet-the-Artist Reception where you will have the opportunity to view classic jazz guitars and never-before-seen photographs from our treasure trove of guitar memorabilia. A musical salute to extraordinary vocalists and guitarists. Long Island guitar enthusiasts are invited for a special night out with Tony, Johnny, Al and Django at the Hot Jazz Guitar Club at DHPAC Guitar Extravaganza

Best of Broadway: On Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m. the Center will present the Best of Broadway, a cabaret review featuring theater songs ranging from classic Broadway standards to new tunes from current hit shows. Tickets are $10.

Head down for another very special performance of Broadway Bound students in a cabaret revue with theater songs ranging from classic Broadway standards to new tunes from recent hit shows. Join us for an inspiring evening of the best of traditional and contemporary Broadway.

Jazz Ensembles: On Dec. 12 at 4:30 p.m., the Center will present the Five Towns College Jazz Ensembles directed by Professor Greg Bobulinski. Each ensemble represents a different instrumentation, repertoire, style and level of student development. This event is free of charge.

Students performing in the FTC College Small Group Jazz Ensembles study all time periods and styles from the first 100 years of Jazz. At the end of each semester, FTC Jazz Ensembles perform a concert featuring the very best ensembles performing repertoire from the Blues, American Songbook standards, pieces from the early formative years of Jazz/Dixieland and BeBop, on up into Hard Bop, Mainstream Jazz, Fusion, and Modern /Contemporary Jazz. If you love jazz combos you will love this show!

An Evening of Jazz: On Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m., the Center will present “An Evening of Jazz” with the Five Towns College Jazz Orchestra and Swing Band, directed by Professor Demetrius Spaneas. Tickets are $10.

One of the best big bands on Long Island continues the tradition of Paul Whiteman, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans, Tito Puente and Brazilian Jazz. If you love the big bands of yesteryear and today, you will love the Five Towns College Jazz Orchestra and Swing Band!

Holiday Concert: On Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m., the Center will present the Five Towns College Holiday Concert featuring the Five Towns College Chamber Orchestra conducted by Composer/Violinist Matthew Pierce, the Five Towns College Chorus directed by Music Department Chairman Jeffrey Lipton, and the Five Towns College Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by special events band leader and vocalist Stephen Gleason.

Join in the festivities of the Holiday Concert featuring music and songs that will celebrate this season of light and love for each other. Enjoy the FTC Chamber Orchestra, conducted by composer-violinist Matthew Pierce, highly-praised for his classical scores for major American ballet companies performed around the world at City Center in New York, Covent Garden in London and the Palais Garnier in Paris. Then be thrilled by the precise and soaring holiday harmonies of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by major special-events bandleader and vocalist Stephen Gleason. Finally, revel in the 80 member FTC Chorus, directed by Music Department Chairman and choral expert Jeffrey Lipton, singing the grand music of the great composers. Join us for this very special Holiday Concert.
