Weekend Roundup for Dix Hills and Beyond

Here's a list of local activities to keep you busy October 22 through October 24.

FALL FAIRS

The Bethpage Fire Department Engine Company 3 will be sponsoring their 3rd annual fall street fair at the Bethpage LIRR located on Stewart Avenue this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be vendors, food, rides, live entertainment, pony rides, a petting zoo, music, a 50/50 raffle and more. Admission is free.

The Commack United Methodist Church at 486 Townline Road in Commack is hosting their annual Harvest Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be boutique items, a white elephant sale, a country store selling homemade jams, fresh vegetables and cheese, American and Korean food, and book, plant, craft and bake sales. Admission is free.

MUSIC

The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College in Dix Hills present their Fall Guitar Festival this weekend. On Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Chieli Manucci performs the Art of Fusion Guitar. Tickets are $15. Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Gene Bertoncini performs with acoustic guitar master Muriel Anderson. Tickets are $20. Closing the weekend, on Sunday at 2 p.m., is a celebration of Andres Segovia featuring classical guitar master Anton Del Forno. Tickets are $10. The Half Hollow Hills Community Library, Dix Hills branch, hosts The Singin' Swingin' Seniors who present "Now and Then," a nostalgic musical revue containing songs from the past including "Give my Regards to Broadway" and "Oh, You Beautiful Doll." This performance is presented free on Sunday at 2 p.m. Contact the library at 631-421-4530 for tickets.

ART

The Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills continues their exhibition, "The Lively Eye: Five Generations of a Family in the Arts." On Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. view a vast range of work in all media by the descendants and extended family of the world-renowned architect Stanford White. White (1853-1906) is best known for designing architectural masterpieces such as the Washington Square Arch, the second Madison Square Garden, the New York Herald Building, gentlemen's clubs, and the Boston Public Library. Admission is free.

The Heckscher Museum of Art on Prime Avenue in Huntington continues two exhibits this weekend. Rock On! Masterworks of Rock Photography features images of rock 'n roll stars of the past four decades by celebrated photographers.  55 images of Rock 'n Roll musicians will be exhibited from the early days of Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry, through the classic period of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Doors, up to today's hip-hop musicians Tupac Shakur and LL Cool J.

Also at the Heckscher Museum is the exhibit Night on the Town focusing on "evenings out" in a wide range of images depicting dining, dancing, music, theater and other night life scenes.  Paintings, drawings, photographs and prints from the Permanent Collection by artists such as Arthur Dove, Larry Fink, George Luks, Man Ray, Larry Rivers and John Sloan, among others, will be included. 

Both exhibits can be viewed Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the museum runs from $4-$8; free for members, children under 10 and certain days/hours. See website for details.

In commemoration of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn continues to show their exhibit of Civil War paintings by Mort Künstler.  The exhibition consists of approximately 50 paintings accompanied by a selection of documentary objects. Many of the paintings are from Künstler's own collection; others are from various private and public collections. The exhibit is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and costs $4-$10 plus $2 parking.

The Huntington Arts Council sponsors the exhibit "Stop Action," which is on display through Jan 3 at the Art-Trium Gallery located at 25 Melville Park Road in Melville. This exhibition features the work by artist members Lillian Dodson, Alain Khadem, Frank Sposato and Marie Sheehy Walker. Each artist uses the medium of their choice to engage the viewer by stopping life long enough to give us a glimpse of the objects, elements and environments that move them to an act of creation. The gallery is open Mon. through Fri. from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free.

THEATER

The Cultural Arts Playhouse on Old Country Road in Plainview continues their Mainstage performance of Stephen Sondheim's musical comedy "Company." Company's plot revolves around Bobby, a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage, the five married couples who are his best friends and his three girlfriends. They all come together to celebrate Bobby's 35th birthday. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20.

"My Fair Lady" continues this weekend at the John W. Engeman Theater in Northport. Join Thomas M. Hammond as misogynistic and snobbish phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, as he agrees to a wager that he can take flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, played by Rachel Moulton, and make her presentable in high society. Show times are Friday at 8 p..m, Saturday 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased at the box office or online at http://www.johnwengemantheater.com/.

HOME

The Long Island Home Show comes to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum this weekend.  This is an event designed for homeowners in all stages of remodeling, landscaping and decorating their homes. There will be hundreds of exhibits with merchandise, sample interior and exterior vignettes, and product demonstrations. Admission is free and many exhibitors will be selling their products or contracts for services onsite at the show, often at a discount. The hours of the show are Friday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
