Weekend Roundup for Dix Hills and Beyond

Here's a list of local activities to keep you busy November 12 through 14.

There's a lot to do this weekend, in town and out. Enjoy.

Theater

The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College presents two theatrical comedies by Christopher Durang on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The first comedy, Baby with the Bathwater, explores the plight of a young couple as they face the social expectations of becoming perfect parents. The second one, The Actor's Nightmare, details the predicament of a stranger who suddenly finds himself on stage to replace an ailing actor. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. As seating is limited, it is best to call the box office to reserve tickets at 631-656-2148 or go online at www.dhpac.org.

The Star Playhouse at the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack presents Ragtime: The Musical. This show focuses on three families--one white Anglo-Saxon Protestant upper-middle class, one socialist Jewish immigrant and one Harlem black-- whose intersecting lives are influenced by the Ragtime era's social challenges in America at the beginning of the 20th century. This show will be performed on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25-$22 and can be purchased at the box office or by calling 631-462-9800 x136.

The Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts on Main Street in Smithtown presents Man of La Mancha, the classic quest of a dying old man whose "Impossible Dream" takes over his mind. Shows are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for adults are $28-$32 and $18 for children and students.

Music

LAR Enterprises and The Hills Foundation Presents "An Evening With The Stars" on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Half Hollow Hills High School East. Come enjoy "Ice Man" Jerry Butler ("Moon River," "For Your Precious Love"), Kenny Vance and The Planotones  ("Looking for an Echo," "Cara Mia"), Jay Siegel and The Tokens ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight," "Portrait of My Love"), Johnny Tillotson ("Poetry in Motion") and special guest Clarence "Frogman" Henry ("I Don't Know Why I Love You But I Do"). Tickets are $45 for orchestra seating, $34 for balcony. For ticket information call 631-587-3565.

Art

The Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills continues their exhibit " on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This exhibit showcases the impressive talents of member artists. Paintings, drawings, collage, photography, print-making, ceramics, and sculpture created by the Art League's members are on display at the League's Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. The gallery is open to the public free of charge.

The Huntington Arts Council sponsors the exhibit "Stop Action," which is on display through Jan 3 at the Art-Trium Gallery located at 25 Melville Park Road in Melville. This exhibition features the work by artist members Lillian Dodson, Alain Khadem, Frank Sposato and Marie Sheehy Walker. Each artist uses the medium of their choice to engage the viewer by stopping life long enough to give us a glimpse of the objects, elements and environments that move them to an act of creation. The gallery is open Mon. through Fri. from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free.

The Heckscher Museum of Art on Prime Avenue in Huntington continues two exhibits this weekend. First, Rock On! Masterworks of Rock Photography features images of rock 'n roll stars of the past four decades by celebrated photographers.  Fifty-five images of Rock 'n Roll musicians will be exhibited from the early days of Elvis Presley, Little Richard and Chuck Berry, through the classic period of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Doors, up to today's hip-hop musicians, Tupac Shakur and LL Cool J.

The second exhibit Night on the Town focuses on "evenings out" in a wide range of images depicting dining, dancing, music, theater and other night life scenes.  Paintings, drawings, photographs and prints from the Permanent Collection by artists such as Arthur Dove, Larry Fink, George Luks, Man Ray, Larry Rivers and John Sloan, among others, will be included. 

Both exhibits can be viewed Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the museum runs from $4-$8; free for members, children under 10 and certain days/hours. See website for details.

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn continues to show their exhibit of Civil War paintings by Mort Künstler. The exhibition consists of approximately 50 paintings accompanied by a selection of documentary objects. Many of the paintings are from Künstler's own collection; others are from various private and public collections. The exhibit is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and costs $4-$10 plus $2 parking.

Seminar

The Dix Hills branch of the Half Hollow Hills Community Library holds a free seminar on Friday night from 7 to 8 p.m. entitled "No Fault Divorce-Changing the Way People Divorce." This presentation by Dr. Neil Grossman, Ph.D., ABPP and Harriette M. Steinberg, Esq. will examine the negative emotions that occur in a marriage, how these emotions may lead to the end of a marriage and how they contribute to faulty divorces. Also reviewed will be the provisions of the No-Fault Law and the maintenance provisions associated with this law.

Expos

A "Party Planning Showcase" comes to the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 this Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be live DJ performances, florists, Judaica, video, caterers, invitations, party entertainment, casinos, party planners & decorators, favors, special occasion fashions, limousines, photographers, calligraphers and more. On Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m., The Gathering of Light Multifaith Spiritual Fellowship on Old Country Road in Dix Hills presents a Wellness Expo for physical, spiritual and planetary health. Learn about Reiki, yoga, herbs, hydrotherapy, green ideas, healthy eating, acupuncture, meditation, aromatherapy, chiropractic, healers, angel messages and more. There will be a raw food chef, psychic readings, vendors, raffles and live music. Admission is $5. Please bring a canned food or dry goods item to be donated to Long Island Cares.
