Dix Hills Collects 550 Pounds of Food for Needy

Community one of Long Island's most generous during Island Harvest food drive.

Half Hollow Hills was one of the most giving communities during the Island Harvest  food drive, which collected canned goods at town pools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties to help those in need.

Dix Hills tied with Huntington and Centereach with 550 pounds each. In total, Long Island communities and town pools collected more than 6,900 pounds.

According to Island Harvest, there are 283,700 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children, who face hunger each day.

The drive, which took place over the summer at the , was a partnership with local communities and Island Harvest to encourage young people to help end hunger on Long Island.

Garden City took first place with 3,145 pounds and Wantagh was second with 600 pounds.

“We would like to congratulate the top pools for their extraordinary donations and thank all the pools who contributed their generosity and hard work, making this food drive a huge success,” Doreen Principe, Program Coordinator for Island Harvest, said. “We want to help children learn to be caring, loving, compassionate citizens in their communities.”

Those interested in donating can drop off canned goods at Suffolk County Legis. Lou D'Amaro's office at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station. Suggested items to donate include canned vegetables, meats, fish or fruit, soups, sauces, pasta, cereals, dry milk, almond or soy milk, baby formula, spices, coffee, tea, personal care items, nutritional beverages (such as Boost or Ensure) or personal hygiene items.
