Small Business Saturday [POLL]

Shoppers fulfill wish lists by shopping locally.

Today is Small Business Saturday, a day to encourage residents to fulfill holiday wish lists by shopping at local mom-and-pop shops around town.

Whether it's buying a delicious cookie tray from the neighborhood bakery or a floral centerpiece from the best florist in town, this Saturday, Nov. 26 is dedicated to the business owners who keep the local economy going.

Small Business Saturday started last Thanksgiving weekend. In its second year, the "shop small" movement has even gained the attention of the White House.

"From the mom-and-pop storefront shops that anchor Main Street to the high-tech startups that keep America on the cutting edge, small businesses are the backbone of our economy and the cornerstones of our Nation’s promise.  These businesses create two out of every three new jobs in America, helping spur economic development in communities across our country and giving millions of families and individuals the opportunity to achieve the American dream.  Through events such as Small Business Saturday, we keep our local economies strong and help maintain an American economy that can compete and win in the 21st century," President Barack Obama said in a message on the White House blog.

While many residents would like to support their neighborhood shops, small businesses can be overshadowed by the price-busting deals Black Friday brings to major corporate stores. Do you plan on shopping small this weekend? Tell us in the POLL below:
