Tanger Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

As if the ladies in one's home needed another reason to shop, here's one that could save their lives.

From now until Oct. 25, Tanger Outlets at the Arches in Deer Park, is going "PINK" for Breast Cancer Awareness month. For a $1 donation to breast cancer research, shoppers will receive a Pink Card that will earn them a 25 percent discount on a single item at participating stores.

Proceeds from the "Power of Pink" campaign will benefit the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition.

Second only to non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

For women in Suffolk County, the statistics hit even closer to home. The Long Island Breast Cancer Study Project found that Suffolk County has both the highest rate of incidents and deaths due to breast cancer than anywhere else in the state.

In Melville, 95 cases of breast cancer were recorded by the New York State Department of Health from 2002-2006. In Deer Park, 129 cases were recorded. The department does not have specific data for residents in Dix Hills, but does report that women in the area have a 15-49 percent higher rate of incidence that expected.

Dix Hills resident Gail King knows the toll breast cancer takes all too well. Diagnosed at age 25 with the disease, she survived and now travels the country as Miss Senior America, telling her inspiring.
