Waldbaum's Store Fades Away

Workers remove last signs of grocery store on East Jericho.

Workers removed signs of the Waldbaum's store on East Jericho Turnpike Tuesday, two days after the 40-year-old store closed for good.

The Turnpike Plaza propert is owned by Kimco Realty, which said last week it expected to soon complete a lease to take over the space. Kimco's website shows the center as fully leased, and while it has said it expected a grocery store to take the space, it hasn't said yet who the new tenant will be.

This reminds me of when they closed the AVIS HQ in Garden City. Sad day. That was a good store with great people working in it. What is truly sad, is that all the things that store and the people who worked in it, did for the community, will be no more....

It was time. The store had a good run but was just not up to par any longer. I do wish the employees well. Maybe the new tenants will give them jobs.
