Dick's Sporting Goods Pulls Some Guns From Stores

Retailer suspends sale of semi-automatic rifles.

Dick’s Sporting Goods has suspended the sale of some semi-automatic rifles from its stores across the country, including its four Long Island locations.

CNN reported that the sporting goods chain made the decision out of respect for the victims and families of Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

In the shooting, 27 people were killed, including 20 school children.

"We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy," the retailer said in statement.

The company has four locations on Long Island: Commack, Huntington, Lake Grove and Garden City.

It is not known how long Dick’s will keep the suspension in place for guns the retailer calls “modern sporting rifles.”

The decision by Dick’s to remove certain guns from its stores comes amid reports that Adam Lanza, the gunman in the Newtown shooting, attempted to purchase a gun from a Dick’s store in Danbury, Connecticut. That location is just to the west of Newtown.

"At this time, reports that the suspect visited one of our stores last week have not been confirmed by law enforcement," the company said in a statement to CNN. "Based on our records, we can confirm that no firearms were sold to the suspect identified in this case."

For Support and Defend, you have given a very clear and simple and unemotional statement of the core issue. Do we we want to prevent future massacres of 6 and 7 year old children, or is it more important for people to be able to buy and possess weapons with rapid rates of fire, and large magazines of ammunition? We need to keep these weapons in our police and military forces; they are not needed for hunting, and they are not needed for personal defense. The simpler kinds of hunting rifles, and shotguns, and pistols, would still be permitted, and legitimate recreational and defense uses would therefore be provided for. Thanks for contributing to more rational thought, Support.

Mr Gruber, it doesn't matter what NY State, or any individual state, does. Unless there is a Federal ban on assault weapons (which definition provided earlier by others, and I tend to agree, would be a weapon which has a rapid rate of fire, and a large magazine of ammunition) it will be useless to have a few states banning such weapons. They have to be kept out of civilian hands in all states in order to protect against future massacres of little children.

I think I made it pretty clear that I disagree with the comparison of President Obama to Hitler. I MORE than disagree. I think anyone who makes the comparison is a knucklehead and an idiot. That's my opinion. What didn't you understand about that?
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 03:47 AM
Can someone please tell me if guns kill people, why is it the person who fired the gun is arrested, prosecuted and incarcerated but not the gun? Obviously your logic doesn't follow that of the law. Also, why is it then, according to the same logic, you don't seem to think that cars drunk drivers crash kill people? And why don't we test backgrounds and psych exams of people who drive or buy knives? Maybe because you only apply it to when it best suits you?
Frank December 26, 2012 at 03:49 AM
There are more than 300,000,000 legally owned guns in thus country and probably tens of millions more that are not known of. You left winger make it sound like a massacre by every gun occurs daily. More kids are killed by drunk drivers in a day than all the massacres but where is the outrage againsts toyotas and hondas???
Frank December 26, 2012 at 03:57 AM
An "assault weapon" is just a scarier looking gun. All guns hold multiple bullets, some more than others. There are guns that are more powerful than an assault weapon. Any gun can be made to look scary. The issue is mental health in America, every massacre has been perpetrated by a mentally defective person. Concentrate on the true issue and dont get sidetracked by scary looking objects.
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 03:58 AM
Allie's grandpa, for the x time, THE RIFLE USED WAS NOT USED by THE POLICE OR MILITARY. IT WAS A SINGLE SHOT RIFLE JUST LIKE MOST HANDGUNS. THis is the problem, half of you have no idea what the issue even is
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 03:59 AM
most people don't know enough about guns nor gun stats to make a relevant comment anyway
marianne krause December 26, 2012 at 04:06 AM
again sl fine if you disagree not fine when you resort to name calling. What didn't you UNDERSTAND?
marianne krause December 26, 2012 at 04:17 AM
@John the problem is that its easier to go after the gun then to someone take resonposibilty. We live in a world that is so pc that just about anyone can claim a mental illness, we as a society consider alcoholism and drug use as a defense because they are considered diseases instead of what they are ...choices, so why blame the person so much easier to blame the gun or the alcohol or the drugs,. No personnal resposiblity .
Frank December 26, 2012 at 04:34 AM
Agreed. But people are generally to stupid t think for themselves and believe everything they hear on TV. So how do you make stupid people understand that the TV news is manipulating them and not focusing on the true problems of society?

That's a lie. The mother was not shot.
Ralebird December 26, 2012 at 05:07 AM
That's a lie. The mother was beaten and stabbed to death.
marianne krause December 26, 2012 at 05:25 AM
you can't these are the same people who complain about our kids being desentsatized by video games, but i bet dollar to donuts their kids have those games, these are the same people who give their kids everything and when they get in trouble they hire the best lawyers they can to defend them (and just to be clear i am not saying anyone in here has had children that has gotten in to trouble just a broad statement to make a point). I have noticed that some on this forum will continually say that we dont care, it's not that we don't care about what has happened its just where eveyone is placing blame. I don't put to much stock in the media because the stories will change from day to day and no one will ever know the truth about this kid, his mother or what happened, the media tends to write things that sensationalize their stories if they didn't no one would be intrested. I am also not putting to much stock in what people like john m and vera or dad of three or smokestack i totally understand they are running on emotion.
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 05:26 AM
you're right on that account. Ok so a mass murder used guns AND knives. So why aren't we having the same discussion about knives?
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 05:27 AM
we arm the overseers of money but not our children.
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 05:31 AM
Vera you don't even know what an assault weapon is. Come back to this conversation when you educate yourself on the subject. Police and Military use assault rifles. They do use that gun, in the AUTOMATIC version, aka the "assault" version, NOT THE SINGLE SHOT RIFLE THAT WAS USED. Half of you don't even know enough about guns to have an informed opinion. We arm the people who watch money but not our kids. FACT
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 05:34 AM
correction: Shot 7 killed 2 FACT: Firing that many shots with a bolt action rifle takes a decent amount of time
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 05:36 AM
Sorry, only 7 were shot and 2 died. He still killed his mother with a knife yet somehow no one cares knife control
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 05:40 AM
Really don't know why I said that. He shot 7 and killed 2 and killed his mother with a knife. It still doesn't dismiss the fact that someone with a bolt action rifle was able to get off at least 9 shots.
Ralebird December 26, 2012 at 05:51 AM
Simply because THIS article is about the decision by a business owner to take certain firearms off their shelves. It is not about abortion, drunk driving, stabbing, poisoning or crashing airplanes into buildings. Those are just diversions by people who don't want to face the unpleasant truth that Dick's Sporting Goods has and don't want to admit that any improvements can be made in how guns are regulated.
John Gruber December 26, 2012 at 06:01 AM
are you that narrow-minded? they took those guns down because of the incident in CT. Yet in the same incident the same killer used a knife, so why aren't they pulling their knives?
Ralebird December 26, 2012 at 06:28 AM
Who's being narrow minded here? A knife cannot be used on a victim beyond arms length, the guns can be used five feet away, fifty feet away and 500 feet away. A gun is certainly more lethal than a knife and the Bushmaster can get off five shots in less time than a knife wielder can make five slashes. Let's not be ridiculous, John - if you're really concerned about the knives Dick's sells, why not ask them? As I said before, these diversions about other potential weapons are made by people who don't want to face the reality that we can, and must, do a better job of regulating firearms to help prevent events like those in Newtown and Webster.

Think I'll come up with a line of kids clothing that is KELVAR lined to go with their bullet proof backpacks....$$$$$

Marianne, you dope. Even if he agreed with me point for point, 100% on the gun issue, If he's going to compare the president to Hitler, he's a knucklehead and an idiot. And those are only the PRINTABLE things I would call him.
Smokestack Lightning December 26, 2012 at 12:56 PM
You don't take much stock in anything I say because it makes too much SENSE! Go back and read what I wrote, and don't just cherry pick the name calling. See if you can read it with an open mind. My guess is you can't.
An Original December 26, 2012 at 12:58 PM
This is about semi-automatic weapons as defined by the United States, not by you John. Reenact the Federal Weapons Act!! That is the only attainable goal available to us. Why should that bother any responsible gun owner? I've posted this a few times and no one comments.

To this day NO ONE has answered my question of whether or not we should repeal all of the laws against rape, burglary, robbery, child abuse, assault, murder, car theft, fraud, arson, tax evasion, and drug dealing simply because there are people who will still commit those crimes. Are those laws a bad idea? Answer the question Marianne, yes or no? YES or NO?
