Hills West Alum Tavon Sledge Headed to NCAA Tournament

Former Colts star will take the court for Iona College in a first round game with Ohio State on Friday night.

Hills West alum Tavon Sledge is going to the Big Dance.

Sledge, a sophomore at Iona College, will take the court for the Gaels against Ohio State in a first round NCAA Tournament game on Friday night. 

Sledge helped lead the Hills West to consecutive Long Island titles in 2010 and 2011. In 2010, he teamed up with Tobias Harris, who now plays professionally for the Orlando Magic, and took the Colts to the state title game.

Sledge averaged 25.9 points for Hills during his senior year in 2011, with his biggest performance coming in the Class AA Long Island championship game, where he tallied a game-record 46 points in a double-overtime win over Elmont. He was named first-team all-state his senior year. 

After transferring from Iowa State, Sledge has started 25 of 33 games for Iona this season, averaging 5.6 points and nearly three rebounds a game.

The Gaels, the 15-seed in the West Region bracket, face a stiff test in the NCAA Tournament as they take on the No. 2 seed, Ohio State, on Friday. Tip-off is at 7:15 p.m.
