LIRR Cancels 20 PM Rush Trains...Again

Full restoration of service pushed back until Friday.

For the third straight day, commuters heading home from the city will need to deal with cancellations on the Long Island Rail Road.

Of the 87 trains normally operated out of Penn Station during the PM rush, a total of 20 will be cancelled and combined with other trains. As a result, some trains will be more crowded, according to a statement on the LIRR website.

All Port Jefferson trains will make added stops at Hicksville and Huntington during the peak rush.

Westbound service to Penn Station will terminate at Jamaica beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. NYC Transit will be honoring LIRR tickets at Jamaica for the E line and at Woodside for the No. 7 line to the city.

LIRR officials now say that full restoration of service won't come until Friday morning as Amtrak crews continute repair work in an East River tunnel following a derailment on Sunday.

“I am disappointed that Amtrak was not able to complete their repair work in time to meet the goal of returning to normal service by Thursday," LIRR President Helena E. Williams said in a statement. "However, I believe that Amtrak is making every effort to return the tunnel back to service as quickly as possible.

"The effort to re-rail the Amtrak equipment took longer than expected and the tie replacement is going slower than estimated because of the effort required to changeout work crews and materials in the tunnel. I want to thank our customers for their patience as Amtrak completes the work to restore the tunnel back to service.”
