Deer Park-North Babylon

A short police pursuit in North Babylon Thursday night ended with five people, including two police officers, in the hospital. 

According to police, officers attempted to pull over a vehicle on Carlls Patch at 8:23 p.m. and when the driver refused to stop, police followed the 2003 Chevy Suburban. With police closing in, the driver of the Chevy, Carl Chavannes, backed into one police car and then hit another police vehicle, police said.

Medford

A family’s dog was saved from a Medford home on Lollypine Lane that was destroyed in a fire Wednesday afternoon. Medford Fire Department Chief Bill Hart told Patch that the fire was called in at 1:50 p.m. and was under control an hour later. The cause of the blaze is unknown.

Babylon Village

The Babylon Village Board heard an application for zoning changes to a number of properties along Cooper Street during a public hearing held at Babylon Village Hall on May 28. The application, petitioned by village attorney Joel Sikowitz, looked to change the zoning on multiple properties, mostly along Cooper Street, from "retail business" to "residence – O," the latter standing for office use.

Lindenhurst

The Village of Lindenhurst Board of Trustees approved a new local law during a public hearing on Tuesday evening, bringing requested stop signs to busy roadways throughout the village. The signs will be installed at Park Avenue at Vermont Street and S. Wellwood Avenue at North Brooke Street and Linden Street.

West Islip

Approximately 20 West Islip teachers have received notices that their jobs could be in jeopardy if the teachers’ union is successful in fighting a two-day furlough plan that is part of the recently approved 2013-14 school budget. School Superintendent Richard Simon on Monday confirmed that those notices were sent last week to comply with a contractual obligation that any teachers in danger of losing their jobs for the coming school year need to be notified by June 1.

Sachem

Suffolk County Police have arrested a Farmingville woman in connection with a hit-and-run crash on Blue Point Road last month that seriously injured a 14-year-old pedestrian. Vehicular Crime Unit detectives arrested Sabrina Jung, 35, and charged her with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, resulting in serious physical injury and 3rd degree insurance fraud.
