Thinking Pink

Think pink? It might be because it’s that time of year. Pink chocolate.  Pink bagels. Pink hair weaves. Pink sheets. Pink stilettos. And, of course, a boatload of pink ribbons.

The New York skyline is lit up with more than 40 buildings as part of the City in Pink. On Sept. 20, Estée Lauder spokeswoman Elizabeth Hurley flipped the switch and turned the Empire State Building pink.

The White House got a pink glow in Washington, DC. People painted their pumpkins pink in Calvert, MD, and women donated art made of bras in Orange City, FL.

In Pennsylvania first lady Susan Corbett turned the fountain pink in Harrisburg. And they did it all last year in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This October promises to bring even more colorful and thoughtful events and opportunities, like the Empire State Building glowing pink in New York City skyline along with 40 other buildings that are part of an initiative called City in Pink.

“Clearly, every person who brings attention to the cause is fantastic,” said Terry Music, chief mission delivery officer for the American Cancer Society.

Bringing it home for Half Hollow Hills residents, nearby  has scheduled a handful of events for the month of October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – related to the on-going fight against the disease.

• On October 13 Good Samaritan will host a free community lecture called Innovative Breast Care: Meet the Experts. The lecture will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Women’s Imaging Center in West Islip.
• A second lecture called Breast Health Diagnosis and Treatment Options will be held October 19 at 7 p.m., at the West Babylon Library.
• Monthly, Good Sam also offers a Breast Cancer Support Group that meets the second and fourth Wednesday. The group gathers at 7 p.m. at the hospital’s second floor Annex Conference Room.
