Fighting Disease and Sickness Naturally.

Natural methods of fighting disease.

The other day, I had a discussion about sickness & disease, and specifically cancer, with the father of a good friend of mine, let's call him Pop. His son, my friend, Dr. Steve Nenninger, NMD is one of the most respected naturopathic medical doctors in New York State. Mirroring the wisdom of his son, Pop said to me, "Remember what we put into our bodies before and after diagnosis could be the difference in whether or not a person survives cancer." He was trying to impress me with the importance of finding the root causes of disease, making lifestyle changes, uncovering hidden food allergies (food intake), and thereby changing the way our bodies respond to an invader, in this case, cancer. Pop is a bright guy, and our discussion was the inspiration for this blog.

We know what’s bad, and we know what’s good, but what is really best when it comes to fighting a disease like cancer naturally with food & natural supplements? I humbly submit, anything green. Cruciferous vegetables, wheat grass, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower are full of a gazillion phytonutrients. Take sugar out of your diet as much as possible, sugars are inflammatory. Get tested for gluten and egg allergies. The body does not need to be fighting two enemies at the same time. If your body's immune system is compromised because of a hidden food allergy it will not be at full strength to ward off disease.

Look into immune boosting adaptogens which are available from certain species of mushrooms. Mushrooms are some of the most effect immunity boosting agents available anywhere. Mushrooms are considered to be premier sources of a class of complex sugar molecules or polysaccharides called beta-glucans. Research suggests that beta-1,3/1,6-glucans have the unique ability to increase the number of white blood cells in the body's immune system army and train them to fight better.

There are other top cancer-fighting foods. Carrots contain a substance called falcarinol that reduces the risk of cancer. Chili peppers and jalapenos are full of capsaicin that helps neutralize cancer-causing substances. Grapefruits contain monoterpenes that sweep carcinogens out of the body. Kale has nitrogen compounds that stop the conversion of some lesions into cancerous cells, and mushrooms have a protein called lectin that attacks cancerous cells and stops them from multiplying. The shiitake and maitake are the real immune-boosting, but good foods just don’t fight cancer. New research out of the Archives of Neurology proves that eating folate found in black-eyed peas, vitamin E found in almonds and Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon can lower your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and can fight its memory-stealing effects once diagnosed.

Vitamin D may improve survival rates among lung cancer patients. According to Harvard scientists, the patients who drank the most milk and ate the most eggs and seafood had a 56-percent survival rate compared to 23-percent who didn’t get enough. Eating just one serving of watermelon or pink grapefruit a day can reduce a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer by 82-percent. Also, stay away from foods that contain monosodium glutamate (tell them no MSG at the Chinese restaurant), hydrogenated fats, nitrates (no nitrate hotdogs for your summer barbeques), and no artificial dyes. All of these chemicals have been associated with emotional health problems. (Geez! now you'll need more of Dr. Oz's Saffron) ...What are the depression-fighting foods? Healthy proteins like lean chicken, salmon, tuna, nuts, beans and soy, which all feed your brain.

Getting back to my discussion with Pop, his point was rather simple, he felt that the energy that your body needs to get well exists in all of us. We just need to stop wasting the healing energy that keeps it distracted on other issues like bad diets, allergies, lack of exercise, or fighting environmental pollutants...we need to use what energy our bodies have to keep our immune systems strong and stop wasting healing energy on things that we can control by eating right for our blood type and taking immune boosting supplements.

I listened to Pop speak and all I could think was.....hmmm, the apple did not fall far from the tree.....
