YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program Event

On Monday, September 30, 2013 the YMCA of Long Island, Inc. will be offering a FREE Island-Wide Diabetes Prevention Program Event to both members and non-members. The event will feature trained lifestyle coaches who will introduce topics that encourage participants to explore how healthy eating, physical activity and behavior changes can benefit overall health. Incorporated will be demonstrations on smarter food choices and the benefits of food tracking. “Education is the first step to improving quality of life” says Tina Graziose, YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program Regional Coordinator, “after education comes successful, long term change and the Y is here for people every step of the way.” Participating locations include YMCA at Glen Cove, Huntington YMCA, Great South Bay YMCA, YMCA East Hampton ReCenter and the Patchogue Family YMCA.

Based on research by the National Institutes of Health, the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps people learn about and adopt the healthy eating and physical activity habits that have been proven to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.  Prediabetes is a potentially reversible condition that often leads to Diabetes, and 79 million people in the United States are estimated to have it.
