Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance featuring Leslie Bai

WWBA is pleased to present Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance, a series of performances and presentations by some of the most intriguing figures in contemporary literature and the arts on the national scene, paired with respected voices on the regional scene.

The series will be hosted by Walt Whitman Birthplace Writer in Residence George Wallace.

Leslie Bai is an adjunct professor of English at C. W. Post, director of Asian Student Services, and assistant director of Korea Center. She recently gave an improvised performance of poetry and dance, entitled Tu Fu’s Sword Dance with a classical Chinese dancer. She has recently been working on a series of Chinese classic poems on neglected and deserted women, including poems by Li Bai, Tu Fu and Bai Juyi, three of the most famous poets in Chinese Tang Dynasty.

The theme of her presentation is “Neglected Women and Deserted Poets in Chinese Classical Poems”. Through improvisation, she attempts to discover a new method of translating Chinese classical poems to bring out both the tones and underlying or metaphorical meanings of the poems.

Alanna Chan will be performing a dance to accompany Ms. Bai's poetry.
