Op-Ed: In Support of a Walmart

Have an opinion on a local issue? Email it to michael@patch.com or apply to be a blogger.

I think the residents of the Patchogue, Medford Neighborhood could use a store to help save money.

The area has a glut of discount 99 Cent, Dollar Tree, Super Saver, Salvation Army, Goodwill, and second hand stores. It's obvious the area economic base is not with Bloomingdales or Macy's.

I am sure Walmart buys their goods at the same places K-Mart and Kohl's get theirs. This store employees American workers and is owned by American's. No one complained when  and  built their Mega Stores.

I rarely shop in downtown Patchogue as there is only a few stores that sell what I want. I shop at Gateway Plaza, the Bellport outlets and wherever I can get a deal for my money. How many of you really shop in downtown Patchogue? I go there for the Theatre and Restaurants, which are great!

I am retired and need to save as much as possible. Walmart will help me realize that goal. My son lives in Parkland, Florida, a near perfect community of expensive and moderately priced homes in a well planned community of parks and lakes.

A large Walmart store is in this community and everyone shops there. Rich folks and poor folks can save in the same store.

What's your opinion?

Paige - there really isn't any big industries in the area that offer careers to young adults. They'd have to head west to Melville or NYC. To say Walmart isn't offering great career opportunities in terms of benefits and full-time, well doesn't this apply to almost all retailers

So just build it you say! Should we disregard the fact that they need a variance, because they don't have sufficient parking ? Should we disregard all the concerns with inadequate infrastructure, bridge, access on, off highway? Disregard illegal zone change on one parcel of land? Disregard concerns of community due to lack of proper plan for traffic control? Or inadequate capacity at county owned sewer plant? Just build and let sewage run in streets that people reside on, where they can't get out of their driveways cause shoppers parked in street, and ambulance is stuck on single lane bridge, while newly built sports complex lets out at same time as rush hour. Yeah that's the ticket.

I think everyone who has an opinion about this should read Sunrise Highway Corridor Study. This study was commissioned by Suffolk County, Islip, and Brookhaven . It explains why shopping malls, and big box stores should not be built along this corridor, and history about those that were built. Easy read. Search Suffolk county government website. We need towns to adopt this study.
