Authorities Rescue Horse Trapped In Pool

Two local firefighters treated for hypothermia at Huntington Hospital.

A horse that was stuck in the in ground pool of a Dix Hills home on Thursday was rescued by firefighters from Dix Hills and Commack along with Suffolk County Police, authorities reported on Thursday.

According to police, three horses escaped from a stable on Grayson Court in Dix Hills just before 7 p.m. on Thursday. The horses headed north on Carlls Straight Path when police officers attempted to contain the runaway animals. The horses then went to the rear of the property at 1394 Carlls Straight Path where two of the horses were recovered and placed in a horse-trailer.

It was not immediately known how the horses escaped.

Police said a third horse, Mikey, was found in the pool where he broke the ice and was stuck in water seven-feet deep. Only his head was above the water.

A combined effort by members of the police department's Emergency Service Section and Marine Bureau Section, along with firefighters from the Dix Hills and Commack fire departments worked for 40 minutes to get the horse out of the pool.

According to Dix Hills Fire Department officials, firefighters Kris Tillis and Kevin Chadrjian entered the pool to place a fire hose under the horse to assist in hoisting it to safety.

Tillis and Chadrjian were treated for hypothermia at Huntington Hospital and are in stable condition, police said. Mikey was walked back to the stable by his owner.
