Bus Safety Checkpoint: 22 Tickets Issued

Police issued 22 tickets during a bus safety checkpoint in Melville Saturday.

The Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section, assisted by the New York State Department of Transportation Motor Carrier Inspectors, held the checkpoint at the New York State Park and Ride near exit 49 on the Long Island Expressway. 

Officers inspected busses and removed unsafe vehicles and their drivers from the road as part of an ongoing statewide initiative to ensure the safe operation of passenger carrying vehicles.

Twenty buses and limousines were inspected. Six drivers were placed out of service for not accurately recording their hours of driving and one driver was removed from the road for a suspended license, police said. Four vehicles were placed out of service for serious mechanical defects.

Twenty-two tickets were issued for various violations of the federal motor carrier safety regulations, police said.
