Fatal Accident on Northern State Parkway

North Babylon residents dies as Brooklyn man charged by police with driving in the wrong direction.

A member of the New York City Police Department was killed early Monday morning on the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills when his car was struck by a van driving in the wrong direction, state police said.

Just after midnight yesterday, North Babylon resident Andre Menzies, 35, was driving his Honda Accord eastbound on Northern State and was east of exit 41 when his car was struck by a Chervolet Astro van heading westbound in the eastbound lanes that was driven by Michael Bowen, 50, of Brooklyn, police said.

Law enforcement authorities said Menzies was pronounced dead at the scene and Bowen sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from Huntington Hospital. Bowen was arrested and charged by police with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. Additional charges are possible pending completion of the investigation, police said.

Police said Menzies, a nine-year veteran of the NYPD, was on his way home from his duty assignment at the Queens Housing Bureau.
