Crimes Nearby: Man Sentenced for Child Porn

Huntington Station

A Huntington Station man died after being shot in the head at a local deli Saturday.

Michael Fredericks, 26, died at Huntington Hospital after the shooting at Los Campos Deli, located at 161 Depot Rd. in Huntington Station at about 10:18 p.m., according to police.

Before police arrived at the scene, the victim was transported to the hospital were he was pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, according to police.

Central Islip

A Mineola man was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison Friday on charges of trading child pornography over the Internet.

Michael Hopkins, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges in U.S. District Court in Central Islip and still faces charges of allegedly raping a 14-year-old Suffolk girl he met on the internet. While Hopkins allegedly did not coerce the girl to have sex with him, she is legally under the age of consent of 15. Hopkins has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors said that Hopkins had been trading the images online for the past 8 years.

According to authorities, Hopkins was originally arrested in 2010 on the pornography charges which led to the discovery of the alleged rape by both FBI and Suffolk police.

Patchogue

An East Patchogue man, who ran a Bohemia gun shop, faces up to 25 years in prison after police found hundreds of weapons, several of them , in his garage, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota announced Thursday.

Northport

Wayne Anderson, 38, of East Northport was arrested on Feb. 1 after police found him hitchhiking in the middle of the road, seemingly under the influence of a substance other than alcohol. A search revealed that he was in possession of seven different types of prescription medication, having a prescription for only two kinds at the time of the search. 

Lindenhurst

Suffolk Police arrested a Lindenhurst man in connection with a bank robbery that took place at the Suffolk County National Bank in Amityville last week.

Thomas Weber, 28, was nabbed Tuesday and charged by Major Case Investigations Unit detectives with one count of robbery in the third degree.
