Dix Hills Fire Department Wants You

The department will participate in the statewide 'RecruitNY' on April 27 to increase number of volunteers and EMTs.

The Dix Hills Fire Department will open its doors on April 27 to area residents, so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter or EMT in the community as part of the fourth annual RecruitNY statewide initiative.

Over the last several years, it has been very difficult for fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Dix Hills Fire Department needs to bolster its emergency responder membership so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for our community.

As part of RecruitNY, on Sunday, April 27 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the Dix Hills Fire Department located at 115 E. Deer Park Rd, Dix Hills will join volunteer fire departments across the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive.

The fair offers an opportunity to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter or EMT and raises public awareness about the need for volunteers.

During the event, the Dix Hills Fire Department will conduct tours of the stations, ambulances and firefighting apparatus, allow visitors to try on firefighter gear, and provide refreshments. The fire department will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved in the fire department.

“Come out and join us for this unique recruitment event at our firehouse,” said Ex-Chief and Recruitment Chairman Richard Sorrentino.

“This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter or EMT," he added "Our current members love what they do, they’re everyday heroes who help neighbors in need. Hopefully this recruitment event will inspire area residents to join our fire service family.”
