Occupants of a house on Wintergreen Drive West escaped a fire that broke out early Thursday morning.
Suffolk County police said the arson squad is investigating the cause of the fire but it did not appear to be criminal in nature. It was reported about 3:45 a.m.
Two adults and two children escaped the blaze, police said.
Melville Fire Department chief Mike McKeefrey said the weather made fighting the fire more difficult. "Everything was icing on us, walkways, decks, etc., made it very tough," he said. The fire was through the roof when firefighters arrived; firefighters got the blaze under control in about an hour.
Melville had assistance from Huntington Manor, East Farmingdale, Dix Hills and Plainview departments.
