Severely Injured Man Found Lying on LIE in Dix Hills

Police shut down expressway at Exit 50.

Police shut down the Long Island Expressway at Exit 50 in Dix Hills Saturday afternoon after a severely injured man was found lying in the HOV lane, covered in blood, according to police at the scene.

According to police, Christopher Wilson, 40, of Huntington Station, was traveling eastbound on the LIE just west of Exit 51, when he left his 1993 Chevrolet Blazer, and landed on the road at 1:18 p.m. The vehicle continued for approximately another quarter of a mile before crashing into a light post on the south side of the roadway, and then continued into the grass and struck a couple of trees. Detectives are investigating whether Wilson fell out of the car, or jumped on purpose. Police said Wilson was not hit by a vehicle.

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to the scene. Wilson was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in serious condition.

Suffolk County police are continuing the investigation.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

Actually the photos look like they were taken after the police stopped traffic.

No. Why? Did he have it mounted on a tripod? From your initial comment, it seemed like "you saw" the driver using a cell phone, I see now you were just "assuming" like 99.9 % of the readers do in these comment forums. Dont judge until you have the "facts". Ive seen the scene and the photos. A lot more investigation is needed. My guess is he fell from the vehicle, possibly after falling asleep and or a suicide attempt. Just my theory. See ya !!! :)

I listened to this as it unfolded on the PD frequencys, the person was found in the road, and the police did an investigation as to where the person came from. They found the Blazer in the woods after a search.

I was in the traffic jam that started at exit 48. Police should have diverted traffic at exit 49. Cars were making illegal u-turns from ther HOV lane to go westbound and making turns into the incoming ramps to get off the LIE onto the service road. There were 2 accidents that occurred in the traffic jam. It took me close to 3 hours to get from exit 48 to exit 50 and 1/4 tank of gas. Hope the man is safe and on the road to recovery.

He may have been using the IPHONE 5 maps and veered off course. Those new balance sneakers saved him big time
