Man in Motorized Wheelchair Killed in Collision on Montauk Highway

Police said Gary Johnson, of Dix Hills, was killed when a Ford Mustang struck him while he was crossing Montauk Highway in West Islip.

A man in a motorized wheelchair was killed while crossing over Montauk Highway in West Islip early Wednesday morning.

Gary Johnson, 55, of Dix Hills, was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Center at 8:06 a.m.

Police said Nancy T. Mecca, 39, of West Islip was driving a Ford Mustang east on Montauk Highway when her vehicle struck Johnson, who was crossing the road in  at about 6:30 a.m.

Mecca was treated at Good Sam for minor injuries and her vehicle was impounded for a safety check.  The investigation is still ongoing.

The accident forced police to close a portion of Montauk Highway (between East Bay Drive and Milligan Lane) for numerous hours Wednesday morning, but have since opened it up.
