Man, 92, Killed in Melville House Fire

Victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

A 92-year-old man was killed Sunday night in a fire on New York Avenue in Melville.

Suffolk County police said Domenico DeVito was found on the first floor of the home by firefighters, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Firefighters from departments around the area including Melville, Dix Hills, East Farmingdale, Plainview, Farmingdale, were on the scene. 

About 75 volunteer firefighters battled the blaze, with unitsunder the command of Melville Fire Chief Mike McKeefrey, with operations handled by Assistant Chiefs Paul Mahler and Chris Nolan. Suffolk County fire coordinators were also dispatched to provide assistance. 

 The Huntington Community First Aid Squad was also called in.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but it does not appear to be criminal in nature, police said.
