Police Chase Ends in Flames

Man hospitalized after collision with tree sparks car fire.

A police chase went wrong Monday night in Dix Hills when a driver smashed into a tree, igniting his car into flames.

According to published reports, state troopers were pursuing a driver on the Northern State Parkway for talking on his cell phone at about 5:30 p.m. The man refused to stop the car and continued to drive off the road.

The crash ended on Vanderbilt Parkway when the car hit a tree and burst into flames. The passenger was still inside, but no major injuries were reported. First responders to the scene extinguished the flames. The driver was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

According to published reports, the driver also hit another car carrying three passengers during the chase, but no serious injuries were reported.
