Police: Dix Hills Man Beat Dog With Baseball Bat

Steven Errante, 26, is arrested in Mastic on Friday; faces animal cruelty charge.

A Dix Hills man was arrested on Friday after police say he struck a dog several times with a baseball bat earlier this week.  

The Labrador mixed breed was later euthanized due to her injuries, police said. 

Police were called to 800 Deer Park Ave. in Dix Hills last Sunday after a man discovered the dog with serious injuries including fractures to her head, face, trauma to the body and a broken forearm, police said.

Following an investigation, police arrested Steven Errante, 26, in Mastic on Friday at 6:50 p.m. Police said Errante, who lived at the Dix Hills address where the dog was found, had also assaulted an adult male on a previous occasion. 

Errante is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals under the NYS Agricultural and Markets Law and second degree assault.

Errante was held overnight at the Second Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday. 

The investigation is continuing police are asking anyone with additional information on the incident to call Second Squad detectives at 631-854-8252.
