West Islip Teen Dies Two Weeks After Crash

Thomas Labetti was in critical condition after he was hit by car while riding his bike Sept. 11; he died in the hospital Thursday.

Thomas Labetti, the West Islip 15-year-old hit by a car while riding his bicycle in town two weeks ago, has died of his injuries in the hospital, Suffolk County Police confirmed Thursday night.

Labetti was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center after the accident on Sept. 11 by West Islip Fire Department Rescue and listed in critical condition with "severe internal injuries," police said. He died on Thursday afternoon.

Labetti was riding southbound on Udall Road, near Pine Avenue, when he was struck by a 2006 Chevy Tahoe that was also headed southbound at the time of the crash, police said.

The driver of the Tahoe, 34-year-old Dennis A. Grabhorn Jr., of West Islip, was not injured in the crash.

No criminal charges have been filed against Grabhorn. The West Islip community rallied around the Labetti family after the crash by organizing meal donations for the family.

Funeral arrangements are currently being made and Patch will post them as soon as they are confirmed.

I knew Tommy. I saw him almost everyday when i went to my cousins house who was also his cousin but Tommy and I werent related. He was so kind to my little brother and I. I absolutley loved hanging out with him until I heard on 9/12/12. My father picked me up from school and he asked if I rode my bike in the street. I said only when i am crossing. Why? My father said that Tommy was hit by a car. The next weeks i kept asking my dad how Tommy was. He repeatedly said nothing changed. I was devastated. Then he told me he opened his eye, then closed his eye. Turns out, it was just a reflex. Then a day or 2 later, my dad told me that Tommy was functioning which was amazing! Then that phone rang and i picked up. It was my dad. I asked how he was. My dad said something bad happened. I asked what happened. My dad told me Tommy passed away. I dropped te phone and fell down to tears crying for 7 hours straight. I kept saying that i never got to say goodbye. Tommy will be deeply missed and i never wil forget him. He always made me laugh and we had great times together. Im still upset and still crying that hes not alive anymore. R.I.P Thomas Salvatore Labetti. Greatest friend of mine ever lived. R.I.P 
