D'Amaro Taking Donations for LI Cares

Suffolk County Legis. Lou D’Amaro, D-Huntington Station, is accepting donations for the Long Island Cares 2nd Annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge His district office will accept food and other donations for needy families who are still affected by Superstorm Sandy.

D’Amaro's district includes Dix Hills and Melville. 

In the three months since Superstorm Sandy, Long Island Cares distributed more than 2.3 million pounds of cleaning products, personal care items, kitchenware, new toys, coats, heaters, non-perishable food and other critical items on Long Island.  Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank requires continual donations in its ongoing effort to eliminate hunger.

Most-needed are:

• Household cleaning supplies
• Non-perishable foods
• Personal care items
• Baby diapers
• Paper goods
• Pet food
• New blankets

Suggested food items to donate include cereal, juice in plastic containers, canned vegetables, meats, fish or fruit, soups, sauces, pasta, cereals, granola, nuts, dry milk, shelf-stable milk, almond or soy milk, baby formula, spices, coffee, tea, nutritional beverages (such as Boost or Ensure), peanut butter, jelly and condiments. 

Donations are being accepted through March 31 at D’Amaro’s District Office, 130 West Jericho Turnpike, Huntington Station, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Long Island Cares provides the items to hundreds of Long Island organizations for distribution to needy families.

“Every day, 300,000 people are hungry on Long Island,” said D’Amaro. “When this startling figure is combined with the large number of families still dealing with the after-effects of Superstorm Sandy, one can clearly see that the need is great. This is why it is so critical to provide food and essentials to affected community residents. Fortunately, we have numerous local not-for- profit organizations like Long Island Cares to distribute donated items to these needy families.  I encourage everyone to donate and thank you in advance for your support.”
