Dix Hills Water to Be Chlorinated For One Year

District forced to treat supply for 12 months after samples tested positive for coliform bacteria in January.

It's not your nose playing tricks. It's the water.

Following environmental law, the Dix Hills Water District must continue to chlorinate its water supply for 12 months after samples tested positive for coliform bacteria in December, Town of Huntington Councilwoman Susan Berland said last week. While the tap water may have a chlorine odor, it is still safe to drink, she said.

"The water's fine. It just smells like a pool," she said at the  on February 2.

The Dix Hills Water District of coliform bacteria in the distribution system on Dec. 27 and 28.  , which likely indicates an error in the testing or an issue at the specific location of the test, town officials said. While the positive findings may have a been a false alarm, environmental legislation requires the water district to chlorinate the water for one year.

Emergency test phone calls will be made in the coming weeks to residents in Dix Hills Water District, the councilwoman said.
