LaValle, Fleming to Debate: What Would You Ask Them?

Suggest questions for the Oct. 15 debate between New York State Senate candidates.

Incumbent New York State Sen. Kenneth P. LaValle and challenger Bridget Fleming, a Southampton Town councilwoman, will face off in a debate Oct. 15 — and Patch wants your suggestions for questions to pose to the candidates.

The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons is co-sponsoring the debate with the Hampton Bays Civic Association, and Patch has been asked to sit on the panel of questioners.

Questions will be taken from audience members, and Patch will present a handful of questions prepared ahead of time — with your help.

Please leave a comment below with your ideas, and Patch will take your suggestions into consideration.

To increase the likelihood that your question is used, ensure that it is fair and not leading.

To many of us out here issues of deer caused diseases and other safety issues is a huge and constant problem. We have had Lyme disease every year for the past 9 years by simply walking on our back yard grass. We have had to be on antibiotics every year which will lead to resistant strains of the diseases. The past 3 Years in Aug- Oct we are plagued by tick larvae that are on the blades of grass- they can go through your clothing and cause multiple bites look like mosquito bites on your legs and stomach but itch for two weeks that keeps you up at night. These larvae cover us when we mow the lawn without hip high boots. We have NO landscaping that has not been eaten, including my attempts to grow some vegetables on my back deck. Three friends in the past 6 months alone have had severe damage to there cars by deer running into THE CAR on Rt 25 and local roads. Last night with my brights on and traveling at 15 miles an hour I saw a total of 18 deer on the roads during my 5 mile drive in Southold. Driving, day and night has become a hazard. The woods around us has thinned out in the last 10 years to the point that there is NO seedling trees to replace it .

Ms. Wilkinson, I think your timing's off. Ms. Fleming did not decide to run or declare her candidacy until the end of May, seven months after the election. The decision was a difficult one, partly because of the very factors you cite, but there are many other components that go into such an analysis. In this case, there was wide and deep support that had not been anticipated, the enhanced turnout expected in a presidential election year, and compelling reasons why a change in the representation of the 1st Senatorial District is badly needed, among other things. As noted earlier, Bridget Fleming has done more for Southampton in two and a half years than most Council members manage in a full term, so that it's a bum rap to claim she'd be departing prematurely.

Lets face it going back to a Dem majority in the senate would be a disaster. Remember last time? MTA Payroll tax, new DMV fees, fees on heating oil etc .... NO THANKS!

I wish I had known of the debate. I would ask the two candidates 1. Where they stand on eliminating New York's Statute of Limitations that currently protects pedophiles from prosecution? and 2. Are you in favor of opening a window of prosecution for those past victims who did not remember by age 23 in time to prosecute? Maybe I'll yet have the opportunity.
