New Historic Marker For Lower Half Hollow School

As Half Hollow Hills School District celebrated the end of the school year on Friday, others celebrated where it all began

On Friday afternoon, the Half Hollow Historical Association, Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland, and Town Historian Robert Hughes unveiled a new historic marker that will reside outside the .

The one-room schoolhouse, located next to Paumanack Elementary School, was established in 1895 and served as one of two schoolhouses for the district.  The other schoolhouse for the district was called the Upper Half Hollow School.  Both schools were closed in 1931 when the district was consolidated, and The Hills School was built to accommodate everyone.

When the building was closed, it was converted into a residence and became home to the groundskeeper for Bagatelle Nurseries, and later Hicks Nurseries.  A variety of plants and flowers surround the premises as a result.

Today, the Half Hollow Historical Association, a non-profit, founded in 2004, calls the building home. Dedicated to preserving the schoolhouse and the history of the Half Hollow region of the Town of Huntington for all future generations to come, the association collects artifacts and photographs relating to Dix Hills’ past.

“Like the school district itself, the unveiling of the marker was a symbol of how from something so small the Half Hollow Historical Association could become so big,” Charlotte Munchnick, president of the association, said.
